Book Talk From a Character’s Point of View
4-Minute Oral Presentation
Key focus point– character development (change)
Be the main character –speak from first person (I)
Dress as this character for the presentation.
Briefly introduce yourself and the novel. In three sentences, briefly explain your conflict. Give the setting and mention any important antagonists. The goal is to provide your audience with enough information to clearly understand your current situation (prior to the climax and resolution), DO NOT give away the ending.
Directly discuss the following categories: include an excerpt from the novel that shows (is evidence supporting your claims). Please do not discuss them in the order given. Introduce a category in the order that these qualities appear in the novel.
—– My personality
—– My values
—– My strengths
—– My weaknesses
—– My Conflict
—– Your changes (from…….to,,,,,,, type of person)
—– Select two examples from the book (excerpts) to read aloud that will support your claims as to your personality traits as listed above. Practice reading them aloud.
Characterization comments might include:
At any time during your talk, step outside of the novel to comment about the author’s development of your character. Consider whether the author made you
believable. Did he or she include enough details to show all of your personality? Give suggestions to the author to improve in a future revision.
Add suggestions for the author to deepen your characterization. Explain what qualities (character traits) were not included that would have either strengthened your “round” nature and would add interest. Be specific about the trait and an event that could have been added to shown this part of your personality.
—– Bring the novel to class
—– Book mark your 2 excerpts so that you can easily located them
I will be collecting a written product; clearly label the trait being discussed in the outer left hand margin. Try not to read a written script; try to “talk” to the class. I suggest that you use note cards to remind you of what you wish to say.
—– You must practice the oral talk at least three times. Record the times and get an adult signature from the person who acted as your audience. Use a note card.
Talks will take place on Dec 9, 10, and 11th.
