PEMDAS = parenthesis first. followed by exponents, then left to right multiplication/ division; lastly left to right adding /subtraction.

Math: Dear Parents: Regarding the chapter 7 math test…. I am recalculating the scores of the tests after deleting the test items 10 and 12-17. While the concepts of order of operations and the evaluation of expression versus number sentences are important, I feel that the degree of complexity far exceeds the standards for 5th grade. (For example, the test includes order of operations problems in which the student must use “nested parenthesis” within brackets. I will rewrite those portions of the tests. This new version will assess the same concepts while using more simplified items. This test will be THURSDAY, March 25th. Therefore there will be two separate tests for Chapter 7. I hope this clarifies the manner in which the assessment for this chapter will be handled.

Students are beginning to work twice a week on individual activities specifically tailored to meet areas where additional support is needed. Thirty minutes on Monday and Thursday are dedicated to practicing sessions where I am consult with each child to further guide their growth. I have met with half the children at this time and will meet with the others on Thursday. Please ask your child to discuss this goal with you.

Math: The class will be taking a second assessment on portions of the Chapter 7 test (which has not yet been forwarded to parents). The focus will be on determining “expressions” versus number sentences, being able to determine if given number sentences are true and use of order of operations (PEMDAS).
HOMEROOM: No homework tonight! (The second of three that were awarded to the class during the Balclutha experience).
PLUS: The class has worked hard on behavioral standards and has achieved a 100 points!! This is to be celebrated: tomorrow is a reading day. Sleeping bags and pillows are welcomed (pajamas are NOT an option).
